Social Networking

In 2007 I became interested in investigating social networking sites in conjunction with the project Street Training by the artist Lottie Child. I wrote a blog post ("Exploring Limited Spaces") then for the Furtherfield blog about my rather confusing experiences with simply attempting to make the first accounts.

Unexpectedly, however, and against my better judgment, I found myself being drawn in to using these sites, especially Facebook, especially after my sister's death, which led me to write another blog post ("Re-thinking some of the issues") reflecting on my experience.

On the whole, I remain sceptical about commercial communication platforms, even though I admit that I do enjoy them sometimes. I feel certain that alternatives are necessary, but the greatest difficulty, I think, is to raise awareness among users.

Despite my reservations, I have accounts on the following social networking sites:

  • Diaspora: aderieg@joindiaspora.com
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Flickr
  • Pinboard - "bookmarking for introverts"
  • FriendFeed
  • Vivaldi: aderieg
